TRIP OVERVIEW

The rich waters of East Cape York and the Far Northern Great Barrier Reef are some of the most remote untouched flats fishing destinations left on the planet. It remains relatively unfished by conventional anglers and most of the flats are unexplored by fly fishermen. There are tropical islands, sand cays and inshore and offshore reef flats that lie between the Cape York coast line and the continental shelf. These flats are home to all the iconic Australian flats species and are a dream destination for saltwater fly fishermen worldwide. There are also stunning flats and remote river systems dotted along the coastline, all of which are inaccessible without a mothership. Our guides are some of the most experienced saltwater fly guides in the country, spending most of their time guiding in the Wessel Islands, the Top End and the Great Barrier Reef.

These trips begin in Cairns in Far North Queensland. Guests will board a sky trans flight for a 1.5 hr flight to Lockhart River. On arrival guests will be transferred by 4wd to Portland roads where the Mothership will be waiting and ready to go. The crew will transfer guests and Luggage to the boat and set off with the skiffs in tow for 5 full days of remote salt water fly fishing. On the final day, depending on the timing of the re supply barge, there is potential for a morning fishing session before departure back to Cairns. Portland Roads is the perfect start point; depending on the weather forecast Aroona will travel either south to the Claremont Isles or north to Piper Islands/Margaret Bay area with the option to fish offshore reef flats and the outer reef either way. The mother ship will travel at night to maximise time fishing and we are not locked in to any locations as we can move daily to different fishing grounds if required.

Meet Your Host

Nick Reygaert is the founder of Gin-Clear Travel. He has carved out a career as a celebrated fly fishing film maker for the last 18 years during which time he has travelled extensively in pursuit of the world's best fly fishing. Nick grew up in Australia and as such has always retained a strong connection with the land, in particular the wilds of Northern Australia and the numerous sportfish that abound in it’s remote waters.
